The number of links in a chainsaw chain is determined by both the guide bar length and the chain pitch. The calculation formula is as follows:
Number of Links = Guide Bar Length (inches) × 2 ÷ Pitch (inches) + Correction Factor
(The correction factor varies by brand and design, typically ±2 links.)
Examples:
- A 16-inch guide bar with 0.325″ pitch ≈ 76 links (Configuration for Husqvarna 545 model)
- A 20-inch guide bar with 3/8″ pitch ≈ 72 links (Configuration for Husqvarna 460 Rancher)
For actual selection, always refer to the chainsaw’s specification manual or the markings on the chain packaging. For instance, an 18-inch guide bar on a Husqvarna 555 model requires a 3/8″ pitch chain with 68 links.
